    Default 348 ac snag

Went out for a drive in the 348 not so long ago and much to my annoyance (as it was 31C) the ac didn’t blow any cold air. All indications were good on the HVAC just normal unchilled air coming through.

I had a snag with it a couple of years back but that involved error codes and daft indications (light on the heat button coming on when ac selected and vice versa) and all was fixed by taking the HVAC out and cleaning all connections. This time no errors just no cold air.

Then it occured to me - the last time it worked was prior to my engine out a few months back. Chance, therefore, that they neglected to refill the gas.

Question is can I check or do I have to pay for a regas and go to a garage to find out? I’m talking without specialist equipment.

    Cheers.

Quick any easy check first Pete is start car up and turn on AC to max cold and max air.
Find the biggest (fattest)pipe out of the two coming out from your AC compressor and put your hand on it, it should be freezing.
Come back and let us know and we can go from there

Ok, no both pipes are the same temp and not particularly cold.

Selecting ac seems to put a fractional draw on the engine (revs seem to go down fractionally then recover to normal idle) while switching between hot and outside air doesnít. Could just be my imagination though. Thereís no click or clunk on engaging the ac just that imperceptible and maybe imagined drop in rpm. Should there be a click on the ac engaging ?

HVAC indications all normal just no cold air.

Think they forgot to gas it or is the compressor not working? Seems a coincidence given the recent engine out if the gas just isnít empty.

Engaging ac seems to put fractional load on the engine........ or it might just be a coincidence that the revs fluctuated when I hit ac

    Sorry
Had to nip out and collect my car from repair, it's going straight back Monday, crap job, anyway

Ok so it's not cold, now I don't know what compressor a 348 has compared to mine Pete, my clutch is on the outside of the compressor so when you turn the AC ON, you here the external clutch engage and starts to spin and pumping the refrigerant around your system.

So do you here a loud click when you turn ON your AC, if not there is not enough pressure in the system this will NOT engage.
If you want a chat before I pop to brewery in 30 mins give me a bell.

    Cheers for the chat, mate.

Just to add for anyone else reading, thereís no click or clunk from the compressor clutch but as Paul says, if thereís no pressure in the system the clutch is designed not to engage. Iíll go to a local gas place and get it filled up, hopefully itís simply that the place that did the engine out just forgot to re-gas the ac.

    Useful info, thanks.

Mine is on the job list for later; happy at the moment with what we use to call 2/60 air con. Open two windows, do 60 mph!! Although a little faster does help
