Default Air conditioning fixed after six years not working on my 328

Ok so as the title says, my 328 since I've owned it has never worked.
Now when I say not working I mean it will not blow any COLD air out at all but the compressor/clutch/blowers function------warm air Only.

Now I know I've heard all the stories from ferrari mechanics that the system is not the best on a 328 and it is what it is (crap) but I thought I'm going to have a go anyway, any cool air is better than none

It was one of those jobs I've just ignored because I didnt know anything about refrigerated components but after doing some research and speaking to an Air con specialist, I thought you know what I'll have a go at that, so over the last couple of months I've removed all my air con system from the car,
Vac'd out old gas before beginning.
Took out compressor/expansion valve/dryer/condenser/fan unit/pressure switches and every air con hose, and cleaned/flushed and replaced faulty/worn parts.

I won't bore you to much, but basically I had excellent high pressure but hardly any low pressure so it was struggling circulating the refrigerant around the system because it was blocked up with years of sludge and a seized up expansion Valve.

I brought all my auto Air con parts from air flow in Birmingham at trade prices because after talking to them about some items I required they thought I was in the trade so they naturally gave me a big discount, I thought It rude not to correct them

The dryer unit I sourced came from a SAAB 900 £12 plus pressure switch £5 Ferrari parts would cost £350-£400, Saab unit fits perfectly same dimensions.

The expansion valve was £9 or £10 from an ALFA 164

I purchased lots of other bits and bobs from them to clean out my system and new O rings etc.

    Pic 1 new expansion valve
Pic 2 old and new dryer
Pic 3 bits and bobs I used to do the job
Pic 4 temperature inside car today just ticking over with 29 degrees outside
Pic 5 Old dryer with the sludge coming out---yuk no wonder it never worked
    Pic 6 blocked pipes
    Pic 7 blocked/seized expansion valve

I'll put some more pics up on a separate post shortly of other parts of the job

    Great fix Paul.....

Have you got your own gauges, vsc pump, gas cylinder etc or are those pics of a specialist filling it for you one rebuilt?

I’d be interested in learning how to service these systems......

    Hi mike
Yes that's Mike's kit from A/C medic after my rebuild, local guy been doing it for 18 years and he's mega busy in this weather.
Mobile guy, he normally works from home, but as it was a special car (his words) he came to mine, he was here about an hour, doing a very thorough job, normally takes 30 mins but after my work he spent extra time making sure all was good, he was very impressed with the system on my old car, especially the condenser as its huge compared to modern standards.
The gas prices he explained are going up weekly due to changes coming soon.
The amount of kit he has built himself is amazing, lots of portable units as he does a lot of farmers combined harvesters
Great guy and he's going to retire soon and enjoy his motor cycle hobby

    Cheers

Next few weeks I've got to sort my leaking gearbox on the drive, sadly my garage is too small to work on the car so have to do all my repairs on the drive in full view of everyone who walks past, not ideal but it is what it is, trouble is people just want to talk about the car, so it sloooooows my work rate down.

Im sure this will NOT be straightforward as a new pan gasket

    Thanks Pete
I just thought I'd put the thread on, as there are a lot of 308/328 owners out there
and the components are very similar but the process is the same.

I always took what the Dealer/indie told me about these systems but just proves DONT believe what they say, a 328/308 WILL give COLD air if it's taken apart piece by piece and throughly cleaned ready for new parts if required and with fresh refrigerant that can circulate
If anyone wants help on there 328/308 feel free to bend my ear, PM me

Well done for getting that sorted ..... my Ferrari is blowing nice and cold but have been lazy with my DD Mercedes which hasn't worked for a couple of ( not so hot ) summers.

Itís given me the incentive to fix the A/C on my 2011 mini which I found out recently doesnít work.
Booked it in for an air con service at main dealer next to where I work thinking it just needs a recharge. Paid £90 for them to hand me an estimate of £550 to fix
